He tries to explain what it means in his culture, but his classmates do not really understand him, and he gets mad at them. The poem was interesting to read because it gave me the sensation that it was written from a kid's perspective but at the same time, it made me think about the multicultural society that we live in nowadays and that we are not being as open-minded as we should. Indian culture is so broad and rich that people from this side of the world sometimes do not understand it and make fun of it, and this should not be. All cultures deserve the same amount of respect when it comes to traditions and rules that do not attempt to harm the integrity of any individual. As a future teacher, I believe that classrooms are where we can perceive more vividly different cultures coexisting, and these environments should be safe for every kid and his or her culture; a safe place when they can feel comfortable with showing their own culture and accept their classmates' differences with respect and tolerance. This is key to live in peace in a multicultural society.
